The next step in developing a CEO mindset is delegating. There are two things you need to know about delegating:
Number one, you have to know the right tasks to delegate. These are usually tasks that make the business run successfully on a day-to-day basis. These are NOT usually tasks that are crucial to moving the business forward, which you should be doing yourself, or in coordination with a specific expert, (see the blog on ‘Asking For Help’).
The second aspect of delegating is making sure that you delegate to somebody who is competent in doing the specific task. Whoever that might be, you need to make sure they know what the task is, and that they are capable of doing it. It stands to reason that if you delegate a task to somebody who doesn’t know how to do it, it’s not going to get done or won’t get done well.
One more thing: Delegating depends on your ability to effectively block your time and manage your priorities. If you want to be running your business and you don’t want the business running you, you need to be very clear on what it is you spend your time on inside the business.
I have a few questions for you to give some thought to as to how effective you are at delegating:
- What tasks are you good at?
- What do you have time to work on?
- What do you really need to be working on that’s critical to driving the business forward?
- What do you need help or other expertise on?
